SEVILLE TOURISM UPDATE

With this year’s ABTA Travel Convention being held in Seville from 8-10 October 2018, LOTUS has collated the latest tourism news from this bustling, vibrant Andalusian city on behalf of the Spanish Tourist Office.

2018 MARKS 400 YEARS SINCE THE BIRTH OF MURILLO

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo was a world-renowned Baroque painter who rose to prominence in the mid-late 17th century. Widely regarded as one of Spain’s finest Baroque painters, Murillo was born in Seville in 1618 and spent most of his life in the city until his death in 1682. Now 400 years on, the city of Seville is celebrating Murillo’s work with a number of special activities, exhibitions and events planned in his honour. For late 2018, special exhibitions include ‘Murillo en el Archivo de Indias’ at the Seville Museum of Fine Arts, ‘Murillo IV centenario’ in the Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla and ‘Murillo in the Cathedral of Seville. A Holy Perspective.’ Events include performance art, live orchestra music and a concert at the Maestranza Theatre on 8 December. SEVILLE ATTRACTS GAME OF THRONES FANS LOOKING FOR A FANTASY WORLD

Picturesque Seville became the backdrop for the fantasy land of ‘Dorne’ during the filming for Game of Thrones and now many avid fans are visiting to get their on slice of fantasy action. Locations such as the famous bullring, Plaza de Toros de Osuna and Real Alcázar and its labyrinth of water gardens were featured heavily. The Reales Atarazanas, Seville’s famous shipyard, with its gothic style arches was depicted in the series as the crypts of the Red Fortress in Game of Thrones. There are many other locations within a stone’s throw of Seville such as the Almodovar del Rio Castle or the Roman ruins of Itálica in Santiponce that make an unforgettable itinerary for inbound visitors. http://www.andalucia.com/cities/seville/alcazar/game-of-thrones

TORRE SEVILLA SHOPPING CENTRE OPENS ITS DOORS

On 26 September, the new Torre Sevilla Shopping Centre opened its doors to the public strengthening the shopping proposition of the Andalucían capital. Designed by world-renowned Argentinian architect César Pelli, the design blends traditional Seville-style architecture with modern functionality bringing together fashion, culture and gastronomy and including an outdoor village surrounded by lush greenery. The opening of Torre Sevilla is the result of 11-years of planning. SEVILLE SHORTLISTED FOR BEST LGBT CITY AT LCD AWARDS

The Leading Culture Destinations celebrate the best established and emerging culture destinations on the planet. This year Seville has been shortlisted for the best LGBT destination. Seville is now being recognised worldwide as an open city, welcoming of all and as such has a number of special events for the LGBT community such as Seville Gay Pride known in Spanish as Orgullo de Andalucía which takes place in June. https://www.leadingculturedestinations.com/

SEVILLE TO HOST THE 31ST EDITION OF THE EUROPEAN FILM AWARDS

On 15 December 2018, Seville will host the 31st edition of the European Film Awards. The programme will include film screenings, Q&A’s, a reception and a film gala open to the public. The Maestranza Theatre, on the banks of the Guadalquivir River, will host the awards ceremony itself which commend the excellence of European film in 23 categories including best film, European discovery, best production designer, best supporting actor as well as special awards such as the lifetime achievement award and achievement in world cinema. WORLD TRAVEL & TOURISM GLOBAL SUMMIT WILL BE HELD IN SEVILLE 3-4 APRIL 2019

The World Travel and Tourism Global Council (WTTC) holds a Global Summit every year that raises awareness of the global, social and economic role of the industry. In 2019, the WTTC Global Summit will take place in Seville, the first return to Europe since 2015. Gloria Guevara Manzo, President and CEO of WTTC said “we are extremely excited to bring next year’s WTTC Global Summit […] to Seville, a welcoming, diverse, and well-connected city, which topped Lonely Planet’s list of best cities 2018.” Juan Espadas, Mayor of Seville, added “We are a great city to visit, to live and to invest, and it is an honour to host the WTTC Global Summit…. The Summit will make Seville the world centre of decision-making in tourism for the next years.” At the WTTC Global Summit the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards will be presented to recognise members of the industry that demonstrate outstanding practice. https://www.wttc.org/

BRITISH AIRWAYS TO ADD EXTRA WEEKLY FLIGHT OVER 2018 WINTER SEASON

British Airways will be launching a new flight route to Seville over the 2018 winter season.
